It’s time to face the facts, Alaska is ranking 47th out of 50 states in child well-being and a devastating 49th in education, our current policies are failing the next generation. There is no single person or group at fault, whether through low voter turnout, division, or shortsighted budget cuts, we have collectively watched our state coffers dwindle while missing the bigger picture.

I am running for State Senate, Seat M, to bring proactive, accountable leadership to Palmer, Trunk Road, and Fairview Loop. We cannot continue reacting to fluctuating oil revenues by starving the very educational systems that lift children out of poverty. Juneau needs to move past trivial debates and focus on building a comprehensive revenue and spending roadmap.

Their future is Alaska’s future. When elected, I will Choose our Children in every vote.

It’s a System

Jenga, the popular block-stacking and balancing game takes its name from kujenga, a Swahili word that means "to build." Each piece that is moved puts the stack in jeopardy. When the tower becomes unstable, the stack falls. We have been making decisions in Alaska that have eroded our systems of support for our children and our system of support for children has collapsing. In education, the Base Student Allocation (BSA) is the basic plan for funding schools. It is computed based on the number of enrolled students at certain times in the school year. The amount is adjusted based on such items as geographic location and student needs.

Despite several one time additions to school funding, the base student allocation has lagged since 2016. $5880 in 2016, adjusted for inflation, would be $8210 in 2026. This school year, the BSA was $5960.One piece of our tower is a fiscal plan.  Fiscal planning is the strategic process of managing financial resources—income, expenses, assets, and liabilities—to achieve specific long-term goals while ensuring ongoing economic stability.
